Evaluation and minimally invasive treatment for scrotal swelling, hydrocele and varicocele by urologist and andrologist Dr. Anand Utture.
A hydrocele is a collection of fluid around the testis that causes painless swelling of the scrotum. A varicocele is an enlargement of the veins in the scrotum, which can cause a dull ache and is a common, treatable cause of male infertility. Both are diagnosed with a clinical examination and scrotal ultrasound.
Painless scrotal swelling or heaviness, sometimes increasing through the day
Dull ache or heaviness, visible or palpable veins ("bag of worms"), low sperm count in some men
Clinical examination and scrotal Doppler ultrasound; semen analysis when fertility is a concern
A short surgical procedure to remove or fold the fluid sac, usually as a day-care or short-stay procedure.
Surgery to tie off the enlarged veins, which can relieve pain and may improve sperm parameters.
Small, painless hydroceles or varicoceles without fertility concerns may only need monitoring.
Semen analysis and hormone tests for men with varicocele who are trying to conceive.
Treatment is usually advised when the swelling is large, uncomfortable or growing, when a varicocele causes pain, or when it is linked to reduced sperm count or testicular shrinkage.
Any new scrotal swelling should be examined by a urologist, since an ultrasound is needed to rule out other conditions. Consultations at Lilavati Hospital (Bandra West), S.L. Raheja Hospital (Mahim West) and P.D. Hinduja Khar Facility (Khar West).
Hydrocelectomy is done under anaesthesia and most men have only mild discomfort afterwards, managed with regular pain relief. Most return to desk work within a few days.
Yes. Varicocele is one of the most common correctable causes of male infertility, and treatment may improve sperm quality in suitable men.
Hydroceles in newborns often resolve on their own, but in adults they usually persist. Small, painless hydroceles can be observed; larger ones are treated surgically.
Dr. Anand Utture treats hydrocele and varicocele at Lilavati Hospital (Bandra West), S.L. Raheja Hospital (Mahim West) and P.D. Hinduja Khar Facility (Khar West).
